LAUNCHING THE GAME FOR THE FIRST TIME
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Launch the game by double clicking the DukeForever.exe in the System folder. Make a
shortcut on your desktop for quick access at any time. When running the game for
the first time a tool will appear to choose your renderer. 3dfx Glide for Windows
and Software Rendering are also options, we do not recommend them and they are
currently unsupported but we plan to work and test them more in the future.
KNOWN ISSUE: Saving and Loading can become a problem if the filepath to
the First Slice is extremely long and/or has a lot of spaces. Try
putting the folder somewhere like C:duke4 or C:Gamesduke4
Continue through the launcher to then run the game.
Please see below for the details of each supported renderer:
DIRECTX 8
This renderer option has no major issues, it does have slower performance than
DirectX 9 but this may depend on your system as well. Unless you are having
issues with DirectX 9 this mode should not be used.
DIRECTX 9
This renderer is the recommended option at this time for playing the First Slice.
There are no major stability issues and should be the default one you use.
It is also the most flexible for modern hardware.
OPENGL
This renderer is still undergoing regular development, it has the
best performance of the 3 modes, but has some visual issues. Some
effects do not render properly and more. It will be updated over time,
and if you want to test it please do.

MISS ME?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Without a doubt, this project was something many Duke Nukem fans would never see in their lifetime.
For those fans who saw that 2001 trailer for Duke Nukem Forever and waited, those scenes, the music
and more are burned into our minds. However, we never did get to experience them. For many of us
on the Mighty Foot Productions team, we kept watching that trailer regularly, even to this day and
I am sure many of you do the same.
The opportunity to see and experience the 2001 version of Duke Nukem Forever, again, was something
the entire industry thought would never see the light of day. Yet, here we are with a demo for
the First Slice of the project aimed to finish the 2001 version of the game. Our goal is to achieve
the same level of interactivity, Duke-isms, humor and action that the series is known for.
However, when it comes to this version of the game we want players to feel the same way playing
the game as they did seeing that 2001 trailer for the first time.
To the many developers and other people involved decades ago that created this 2001 build,
you created something that is truly special. I am sure you have seen the positive reception
and we will continue to polish and restore this project to honor that work which never got
its due beyond the 2001 trailer.
Well, what are you waiting for? Christmas?
Time to read all these wonderful details and play a brand new Duke Nukem project!
Peace and love to all the developers who came before us to set the stage for Duke’s return!

THE STORY SO FAR
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fame? Glory? Babes? If you're gonna have it all you gotta earn it all, and that's what our
hero Duke Nukem has done for himself. After battling back the Cycloid Invasion and
other wild adventures that left him bounding across space and time, the main man has set
his eyes on the next big challenge... Opening a lavish casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Lady Killer is the new star attraction on the strip, seated close to a trio of themed
competition, The Menage. Well those aliens got their asses kicked, it's time for Duke
to kick up his boots and bask in the glory of many jobs well done. They say even the
president is going to be attending the opening night, maybe Duke will have time to shake his
hand after an interview and penthouse shindig, better be a bottle of Jack and good lookin' lady
up there.
Do the battles of Duke's past haunt him these many years later?
Hell no, he's here to party it up in style tonight! Viva Las Vegas!

USING THE SOS MAIN MENU
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you run the game for the first time Duke’s Shades Operating System (SOS) will load up
and ask you to create a Profile! Enter whatever name you would like and then select it.
You can also make multiple profiles. The shades and the AI within them will be with Duke for his
entire adventure in Duke Nukem Forever.
This is your Main Menu to play the story, multiplayer, adjust settings and more.
GAME
To jump into Duke’s mighty boots right away select this. You will be able to select any
level you like to begin! However we recommend you start with “Intro” and continue from
there for the proper narrative experience. For those who just want to explore and play any
level right away the option is available, it's up to you. You can select your difficulty
here too, each difficulty level differs in the toughness, number and types of enemies you will
face along with other surprises. This section is also where you can load from a save game,
make a new profile and quit the game.
SETTINGS
Here you can adjust your gameplay experience in various ways. This includes video, audio,
control and other various game settings. Most settings should be familiar to any gamer this
includes settings such as Field of View, Subtitles, Resolution and more. All controls
can be bound for your own customizing to what suits you best! If you need assistance
with any of these please join our Discord community server for support from the team and
fellow community members.
We are currently striving to include more accessibility options. The first we have
been able to implement are Subtitles for dialogue and a lot of the sound effects. You
can find this under the SOS part of the Settings.
TIP: You can also set your FOV in the Console by pressing F12 and using FOV XXX
(See Support below for details on how to join the Discord Server)
MULTIPLAYER
While still in development, the multiplayer is functional and you can join and host games.
There are some new multiplayer maps, models to use and more but everything is still very
early and is the most unfinished part of the First Slice.
SUPPORT
This is a relic of the original 2001 build that we left in, for support and community
involvement please join our Discord server:

SAVING, LOADING AND QUICKSAVING
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MANUAL SAVE: Simply press the ESC key to open the Main Menu, here you will
go to Game and then Save to save your current progress.
QUICKSAVE: Pressing the function key F5 allows you to Save a game without
leaving the action. The first time Quicksave is used in a given game, the
standard Save menu appears. Select a slot. From then on, pressing F5
automatically saves the game to that slot without interrupting the fun of
killin’ aliens. Pressing F9 twice loads in the last Quicksave game after
prompting
KNOWN ISSUE: Saving and Loading can become a problem if the filepath to
the First Slice is extremely long and/or has a lot of spaces. Try
putting the folder somewhere like C:duke4
TIP: Save your game and save it often. When you die, you're back to the beginning of the level, there is no auto-save!

ON-SCREEN INFORMATION (SOS DISPLAY/HUD)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The game provides on-screen information that's necessary for Duke to overcome this
next alien invasion of Earth and the attack on his Lady Killer casino.
EGO
This bar is Duke’s ego, as he stumbles in combat and lets enemies get the drop on him his ego breaks
and Duke’s honor is so betrayed he no longer can fight.
POWER
This bar is how much Power Duke’s various SOS upgrades have for use. This includes Night Vision and more.
Power Cells can be used to increase your Power, these can be purchased at EZ Vend machines and also found in levels.
CLIP
This shows how much ammo is left in the current clip of the weapon Duke is using.
TYPE
This shows the type of ammo the weapon is currently using which can be changed by pressing the right mouse button.
CASH
At the bottom is the amount of Cash Duke has in his wallet to purchase items and spend at the local strip club.
WEAPON AND ITEM MENU
Pressing the TAB button will bring up the weapon and item menu. You can equip all your current weapons and items here.
OBJECTIVES
SOS mission objectives are important to help guide you through levels.
Sometimes the Earth Defense Force and others will contact Duke as well and provide new or updated Objectives.
Objectives will also update automatically as Duke completes them and the SOS AI will speak to Duke to let him know,
along with the HUD showing a message. We are working on having this as a dedicated key but for
the First Slice it is under the 7 numeric key in the weapon and item menu.
CONSOLE
Pressing F12 while in game will bring up the heavily enhanced console. With many new features and additions
you will be able to use various cheats, load maps, spawn enemies and more! Please note that using cheats can
cause unforseen consequences.

KNOWN ISSUES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are a few known issues with the First Slice that we continue to work on but are not game breaking issues.
The team has listed them below so you can refer to it if you experience it yourself while playing:
1. Mirrors and other reflective surfaces can experience odd issues when the player gets close
to them and Duke’s model will appear larger and in an odd way in the mirror. This is being
worked on but can be noticed easily during the “Why I’m So Great…” opening area.
2. Music can sometimes cut out during levels, again this has mostly been fixed but if it does
happen please know we are still trying to get this 100% fixed. We will be moving to a more
modern audio engine post-First Slice which will also assist to solve this issue and enhance
the audio in the game overall.
3. Yes Duke can piss on enemies, however when in a crouch position the piss will…come from
Duke’s face. We are adjusting this, but for now enjoy a weird bug that will likely create at
least ONE meme.
4. In the level Dark Hotel, there can be a crash to desktop when jumping onto the ropes near
the start of the level or when jumping on them later in the level. It has been difficult
to pinpoint, for now please save often in Dark Hotel.
5. Saving and Loading can become a problem if the filepath to the First Slice is extremely long
and/or has a lot of spaces. Try putting the folder somewhere like C:duke4
